Coralbrite is a toothpaste manufactured in Japan and sold by Coral Club in 80 g tubes. Its key ingredient is hydroxyapatite sourced from fossil coral on Yonaguni Island, sold under the name CoralApatite®. The formula also contains calcium carbonate from limestone, allantoin, onion bulb extract, mastic gum from the Greek island of Chios and Japanese mint oil. It contains no fluoride. According to Coral Club, 99.7% of its ingredients are naturally derived.

Coral Club describes Coralbrite as a toothpaste that cleans, gently polishes away surface stains for a brighter smile and leaves the mouth feeling fresh, and states that its hydroxyapatite helps maintain the smoothness and strength of tooth enamel.

What hydroxyapatite is

Hydroxyapatite is a calcium phosphate mineral, and it is the main mineral of tooth enamel and bone. Toothpastes use it as a mild polishing agent and as a source of calcium and phosphate at the tooth surface. Coral Club describes Coralbrite as one of the first toothpastes with naturally sourced hydroxyapatite derived from coral fossils. Yonaguni is the westernmost inhabited island of Japan, part of Okinawa Prefecture.

Hydroxyapatite toothpastes have been studied for years, mostly in Europe and Japan, and systematic reviews have looked at their effects on enamel and on tooth whitening. In the United States, toothpaste claims about preventing cavities or relieving sensitivity are regulated as drug claims, and Coralbrite is sold as a cosmetic toothpaste.

The other ingredients

Calcium carbonate from natural limestone is a common cleansing and polishing agent that helps remove surface debris. Allantoin and quercetin-containing onion extract are included, according to Coral Club, to help soothe and protect the gums and oral tissues. Mastic, the resin of the mastic tree known as "Tears of Chios," has been chewed around the Mediterranean for centuries for fresh breath; with Japanese mint oil it gives the paste its taste. A soap base is used as the foaming cleanser, and phenoxyethanol serves as the preservative.

Using it safely

Toothpaste is a product for external use in the mouth: brush, spit out and do not swallow. The directions are written for adults. Keep the tube out of reach of children, and do not use it if the packaging is damaged. Discontinue use and see a dentist if irritation of the gums or mouth develops. Because Coralbrite contains no fluoride, ask your dentist whether it suits your needs, especially if you are prone to cavities.

Shelf life is 24 months from the date of production. Store at 32–77°F (0–25°C).
