Metastick is a dietary supplement manufactured in Taiwan by TCI and sold by Coral Club in single-serving 20 ml (0.68 fl oz) stick packs. Each stick contains 10 g of banana pulp extract, 2.5 g each of two Lactobacillus plantarum metabolite substrates — TCI507, fermented from orange peel, and TCI378, from a strain isolated from Korean kimchi — and 2 mg of vitamin B6, 118% of the Daily Value. The directions call for one or two sticks a day, so a box of 15 lasts 7 to 15 days.
Coral Club describes Metastick as a metabiotic that helps support the digestive and immune systems, helps support digestion and the absorption of food, supports the gut muscles and regular bowel movements, helps maintain cholesterol levels already within the normal range, and helps with appetite control.*
"Metabiotic" is Coral Club's term; researchers more often use "postbiotic." Instead of live bacteria, the product contains substances produced by bacteria during fermentation. In Metastick these are the supernatants — the liquid left after fermentation — of two Lactobacillus plantarum cultures. Because nothing in them needs to stay alive, a postbiotic does not depend on refrigeration or on bacteria surviving stomach acid. In 2021 the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics published a consensus definition of postbiotics, and the field is still young.
According to Coral Club, the metabolites help maintain healthy gut microflora and reduce gas and intestinal discomfort, and laboratory research on one of the strains has looked at bile acid metabolism and fat cell formation.* That research, on the TCI378 strain, was done in the laboratory, not in people taking Metastick.
Banana pulp is the largest ingredient by weight. Coral Club states that it supplies fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and soluble fiber, which feed beneficial gut bacteria, along with organic acids, potassium, magnesium and vitamins.* The card does not give the fiber or FOS content. It does give nutrition values: one stick contains 60 calories, 15 g of total carbohydrate and 20 mg of sodium.
Vitamin B6 is involved in protein metabolism, the formation of red blood cells and the normal function of the nervous system. Each stick provides 2 mg, and two sticks provide 4 mg — well below the adult upper intake level of 100 mg a day.
The card lists the vitamin B6 in one panel as pyridoxine hydrochloride and in another as pyridoxal-5'-phosphate; the "Pack includes" field names pyridoxine hydrochloride. The second panel also lists TCI507 twice where the other lists TCI507 and TCI378. This page follows the first panel and the ingredient list.
The card recommends consulting a physician before use and lists pregnancy, breastfeeding and individual intolerance to the ingredients as reasons for caution. Coral Club labels Metastick suitable for vegetarians, halal certified and free of soy; the lecithin comes from sunflower. Shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture. Store in a dry place, away from direct sunlight, at a temperature not exceeding 77°F (25°C), out of reach of children.

The sources below concern its ingredient categories and one of its strains: the international consensus definition of postbiotics, the consensus definition of prebiotics such as fructooligosaccharides, and a laboratory study of the Lactobacillus plantarum TCI378 strain isolated from kimchi.
