Coral Licorice Root is a dietary supplement manufactured in the USA. Each capsule contains three extracts: 300 mg of deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) root extract, 80 mg of licorice root extract and 20 mg of ginger root extract. The label directs one capsule twice a day with a meal, so a bottle of 100 capsules lasts 50 days.

Coral Club states that the product may support immune health and helps promote digestive comfort.*

Two kinds of licorice in one capsule

Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) naturally contains glycyrrhizin, a sweet triterpenoid compound. Glycyrrhizin is also what gives licorice its best-known side effect: taken regularly in larger amounts, it can raise blood pressure, lower blood potassium and cause fluid retention.

Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) is licorice extract from which most of the glycyrrhizin has been removed. It makes up the larger part of this formula.

The 80 mg of regular licorice root extract, however, is not described as deglycyrrhizinated, and the card does not state its glycyrrhizin content. The amount per day is unknown and may well be modest, but it cannot be assumed to be zero. The Research tab lists a systematic review of licorice intake and blood pressure.

Ginger

Each capsule also contains 20 mg of ginger root extract. Coral Club states that ginger is traditionally used and may help support a healthy immune system.*

Who should check with a doctor first

Because of the regular licorice extract, anyone with high blood pressure, heart or kidney problems, or low potassium should consult a physician before use. The same applies to anyone taking diuretics, corticosteroids, digoxin or blood pressure medicines. Licorice is traditionally avoided during pregnancy, and Coral Club directs anyone pregnant or nursing to consult a healthcare practitioner first.

What else is in the capsule

The supplement facts panel lists a capsule of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and water, coral powder and magnesium stearate. Coral Club labels the product gluten free and free of soy.

The card is inconsistent in two places. Its badges say "capsules made from beef gelatin", contradicting the plant-based capsule on the panel. Its "The Pack includes" field lists magnesium taurate and glycinate in a gelatin capsule — a description that does not match this product's panel at all. The panel figures are used on this page; check the bottle label if gelatin matters to you.

Storage

Shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture. Store in a dry place at room temperature, out of reach of children. Do not use if the safety seal is broken or missing.
