Coral Magnesium is a dietary supplement manufactured in the USA. Each capsule provides 150 mg of magnesium in two forms, magnesium taurate and magnesium glycinate, which is 36% of the Daily Value. The label directs one capsule twice a day with a meal — 300 mg of magnesium a day — so a bottle of 90 capsules lasts 45 days.
Coral Club states that magnesium helps maintain healthy muscle and nerve function, supports cardiovascular and neuromuscular tissue health, and supports bone health.*
Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in more than 300 enzyme reactions in the body, including those that produce energy, build proteins and copy DNA. About half of the body's magnesium is stored in bone. Coral Club states that magnesium supports a healthy nervous system, including during periods of occasional stress, and is involved in the structure of bones and tooth enamel.*
Green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains are the main food sources, and dietary surveys suggest that many adults eat less magnesium than recommended.
In both forms, magnesium is bound to an amino acid — taurine or glycine. Coral Club describes them as easily absorbed and generally well tolerated. Forms of this kind are often chosen over magnesium oxide because they are less likely to loosen stools, although published absorption figures vary between studies and methods.
"Coral" is Coral Club's brand name. The supplement facts panel lists magnesium taurate and glycinate, a gelatin capsule and magnesium stearate — no coral powder or coral calcium.
The card's "The Pack includes" field currently lists a different formula (magnesium glycinate with L-theanine, lemon balm, hops, St John's wort and skullcap) that matches Coral Club's Evening Formula, not this product's panel. This page follows the panel. If the label on your bottle lists St John's wort, read the medication warnings for Evening Formula before use.
The Daily Value for magnesium is 420 mg. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for magnesium from supplements — not counting food — is 350 mg a day for adults. Two capsules provide 300 mg, just below that level, so take other magnesium-containing products into account.
Anyone with reduced kidney function should consult a physician before taking magnesium supplements. Magnesium can reduce the absorption of some medicines — tetracycline and fluoroquinolone antibiotics, bisphosphonates and levothyroxine — so these are usually taken a few hours apart. Anyone pregnant or nursing should consult a healthcare practitioner first.
The capsule is made from beef gelatin, so the product is not suitable for vegetarians. Coral Club labels it gluten free and free of soy. Shelf life is 2 years. Store in a dry place, protected from direct sunlight, at a temperature not exceeding 77°F (25°C), out of reach of children.
