Coral Kelp is a dietary supplement manufactured in the USA for Coral Club. Each capsule contains 180 mg of kelp (Laminaria japonica) extract, 150 mg of rose hips (Rosa canina) extract and 20 mg of ginger (Zingiber officinale) root extract. The label directs one capsule once or twice a day with a meal, so a bottle of 60 capsules lasts 30 to 60 days.

Coral Club describes Coral Kelp as a combination of herbs and seaweed that may support endocrine system health, and states that kelp may help support healthy digestive function and antioxidant capacity.*

Kelp and iodine

Kelp is a brown seaweed and one of the richest natural sources of iodine, the mineral the thyroid gland uses to make its hormones. Iodine content in seaweed varies widely between species, harvests and processing methods, and the card does not state how much iodine Coral Kelp contains.

Both too little and too much iodine can disturb thyroid function. Coral Club's own precaution directs anyone with a thyroid condition, or taking iodine-containing medications, to consult an endocrinologist before use. The same care applies to anyone taking thyroid hormone, antithyroid medicines, amiodarone or lithium, and to anyone already taking a multivitamin with iodine. Sources on iodine variability in seaweed and on excess iodine are listed under Research.

Rose hips and ginger

Rose hips are the fruit of the dog rose. Coral Club states that they may help support metabolic health and immune system function.* Ginger root contains naturally occurring compounds with antioxidant properties and has traditionally been used to support digestive function.* Ginger may add to the effect of anticoagulant medicines.

What else is in the capsule

The supplement facts panel lists a capsule of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and water, microcrystalline cellulose, coral powder and magnesium stearate. Coral Club labels the product gluten free and free of soy. The card also shows a "capsules made from beef gelatin" badge, which contradicts the plant-based capsule on the panel; check the bottle label if gelatin matters to you.

Precautions and storage

If pregnant or nursing, consult a healthcare practitioner before use; iodine needs change in pregnancy and excess iodine is best avoided. Shelf life is 2 years. Store in a dry place, protected from direct sunlight, at a temperature not exceeding 77°F (25°C), out of reach of children.
