Pau D'Arco Bark is a single-herb dietary supplement manufactured in the USA for Coral Club. Each vegetable capsule contains 500 mg of pau d'arco (Tabebuia impetiginosa) bark powder with rice concentrate. The label directs adults to take one or two capsules daily with meals, so a bottle of 90 capsules lasts 45 to 90 days.

What pau d'arco is

Pau d'arco — also known as lapacho, taheebo or ipê roxo — is the inner bark of a flowering tree native to Central and South America. It has a long history of traditional use and is commonly prepared as a tea or taken as powdered bark. The bark contains naturally occurring naphthoquinones, including lapachol and beta-lapachone, along with other plant compounds. Coral Club states that pau d'arco supports the body's natural defenses.*

The capsules contain simply powdered bark, not a concentrated extract, and the card does not state the lapachol content. Because naturally grown bark varies, the amount of active compounds in any pau d'arco product can differ from batch to batch. Taking the capsules with meals, as directed, may help reduce stomach upset.

A mix-up on the card

The description section of Coral Club's US card for Pau D'Arco Bark describes a complex with Brazilian mate and olive leaf extract. That description belongs to a different product, Pau D'Arco with Mate. The supplement facts panel for Pau D'Arco Bark lists only pau d'arco bark powder, and this page follows the panel. Coral Club also offers Pau D'Arco with Selenium, which adds vitamin C and selenium.

Who should check first

Coral Club directs anyone pregnant or nursing, taking medication, or with a medical condition to consult a healthcare professional before use. In particular:

  • Pregnancy: pau d'arco is traditionally avoided during pregnancy.
  • Blood thinners: lapachol may interfere with blood clotting; anyone taking warfarin or antiplatelet medicines, or preparing for surgery, should consult a physician.
  • Higher amounts of pau d'arco have been associated with nausea and digestive upset.

What else is in the capsule

Rice concentrate and a capsule of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. Coral Club labels the product suitable for vegetarians and free of soy.

Storage

Shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, not above 25°C (77°F), out of reach of children.
