Silver-Max is a dietary supplement manufactured in the USA for Coral Club. It is a colloidal silver solution — fine silver particles suspended in purified water — providing 35 mcg of purified silver per ½-teaspoon (2.5 ml) serving, which corresponds to a concentration of about 14 ppm. The label directs half a teaspoon once or twice a day. The 118 ml bottle holds about 47 servings.

Coral Club states that colloidal silver is valued in traditional wellness practices and helps support the body's natural defenses.*

What the evidence says

Silver has been used on the skin and in wound dressings for a long time. Taken by mouth, however, colloidal silver has no established nutritional role: silver is not an essential mineral, and there is no Daily Value for it. The US Food and Drug Administration has not recognized colloidal silver as safe and effective for any medical use, and in 1999 it ruled that over-the-counter drug products containing colloidal silver could not be sold for any medical purpose. No clinical study has assessed Silver-Max.

Argyria

The best-documented risk of taking silver by mouth over long periods is argyria: a permanent blue-gray discoloration of the skin, nails, gums and eyes caused by silver deposits. It does not reverse when the product is stopped. Case reports describe argyria mostly after prolonged or large intakes of colloidal silver. Sources are listed under Research.

At the directed 35–70 mcg a day, intake is below the oral reference dose that the US Environmental Protection Agency set for silver to avoid argyria (5 mcg per kilogram of body weight a day). That margin shrinks with higher or more frequent servings, long-term use, children, or other silver sources.

Medicines

Silver can reduce the absorption of some medicines, including quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics, thyroxine and penicillamine. Anyone taking prescription medicines should speak to a physician or pharmacist before use.

Who should check first

Coral Club directs anyone pregnant or nursing to consult a healthcare practitioner. Colloidal silver is not suitable for children without medical advice. Any infection or illness should be managed by a doctor rather than with a silver product.

Storage

Coral Club labels Silver-Max gluten free. Shelf life is 3 years. Store in a dry place, protected from direct sunlight, at no more than 77°F (25°C), out of reach of children.
