Emu Oil is a cosmetic skin oil in a 50 ml bottle, manufactured in the Netherlands for Coral Club. The formula is 99.7% emu oil, with rosemary leaf essential oil (0.2%) and vitamin E making up the rest.

Coral Club describes it as an oil that helps nourish and soften the skin, leaving it smooth and hydrated, and states that it is suitable for all skin types and non-comedogenic.

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. Discontinue use if irritation occurs. Keep out of reach of children.

What emu oil is

Emu oil is rendered and refined from the fat of the emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae), a large flightless bird native to Australia. It has long been valued as a skin-conditioning oil. Because it is of animal origin, the product is not vegan or vegetarian. The oil used in cosmetics is refined, which gives it a pale color and very little odor of its own.

Emu oil is made up mainly of triglycerides. Oleic acid (omega-9) is the principal fatty acid, alongside linoleic acid (omega-6) and saturated palmitic and stearic acids. Coral Club states that these fatty acids help nourish and condition the skin, supporting softness and elasticity.

What Coral Club says it does

  • Deeply moisturizes and softens the skin.
  • Helps comfort and soothe dry, irritated-feeling skin.
  • Helps relax and soften the skin after physical exertion and after exposure to wind, sun or cold.
  • Absorbs without leaving a greasy residue and combines well with other cosmetics.

What research exists

Published research on emu oil as a cosmetic is limited. A small double-blind pilot study assessed its moisturizing and cosmetic properties, and a chemical and toxicological evaluation characterized its composition. Both concern emu oil in general rather than this product; they are listed under Research.

Rosemary leaf oil and vitamin E

Rosemary leaf essential oil, at 0.2%, gives the oil a light herbal aroma. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps protect the oil from oxidation. Coral Club states the product does not contain common allergens; as with any essential oil, rosemary oil can occasionally irritate sensitive skin, so a patch test before first use is sensible.

Cosmetic, not a medicine

Emu Oil is sold as a cosmetic. Its purpose is the care and appearance of the skin. Any persistent skin problem, or joint or muscle pain, should be seen by a doctor rather than managed with a skin oil.

How to use and store it

Shake well before use. Apply a small amount to the skin and massage until completely absorbed. Store in a dry place at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F), out of reach of children. Shelf life is 2 years.
