Silver Gel is a cosmetic gel manufactured in the USA for Coral Club. It contains silver at a concentration of 24 parts per million (ppm), produced using the patented SilverSol Technology®, in a simple water-based gel. The formula has four ingredients: water, carbomer (Carbopol), triethanolamine and silver. The tube holds 1.5 fl oz (about 44 ml).

Coral Club states that silver has a history of topical use and helps maintain skin cleanliness and support the skin's natural protective barrier after minor daily wear and exposure.

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. Discontinue use if irritation occurs. Keep out of reach of children.

What is in the gel

  • Water — the base of the gel.
  • Carbopol (carbomer) — a widely used thickener that turns water into a clear gel.
  • Triethanolamine — adjusts the pH so that the carbomer thickens.
  • Silver, 24 ppm — equivalent to 24 mg of silver per liter of gel, or roughly 1 mg in a full tube.

Coral Club states that the gel base is designed to help the silver reach the surface layers of the skin.

A cosmetic, not a wound product

Silver Gel is sold as a cosmetic for the care of intact skin. It is not intended for wounds, burns, infections or any skin condition, and it does not take the place of medical wound dressings. Cuts that are deep or dirty, burns, bites and skin that becomes red, hot or painful should be seen by a doctor. The US Food and Drug Administration has not recognized colloidal silver products as safe and effective for any medical use.

Silver and the skin

Silver has been used on the skin for a long time, and small amounts applied to intact skin are generally well tolerated. Long-term, heavy exposure to silver — mainly from swallowing silver products — can cause argyria, a permanent blue-gray discoloration of the skin. Silver Gel is for external use only and should not be swallowed or applied to large areas of broken skin. Sources are listed under Research.

Who it suits

The gel is clear, water-based and free of oils, so it absorbs quickly and leaves no greasy film, which makes it easy to layer under other skin care products. With only four listed ingredients it is a short formula; as with any product applied daily, anyone with sensitive or reactive skin should test it on a small area first.

How to use and store it

Apply to cleansed skin in the morning and at night. Store in a dry place at room temperature, out of direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Shelf life is 2 years.
