The amounts in context
Two capsules a day provide 600 mg of glucosamine HCl and 500 mg of chondroitin sulfate. Most published trials of glucosamine have used around 1,500 mg a day and many chondroitin trials around 800–1,200 mg, so FlexiCor supplies less of each than those studies. Results from those trials cannot be transferred directly to this formula.
Sources and allergies
Glucosamine is commonly produced from the shells of shrimp, crab and other shellfish, and chondroitin from animal cartilage. The card does not state the source of either. Anyone with a shellfish allergy should check with the manufacturer or a physician before use; the Research tab lists a small study on shrimp-allergic individuals and glucosamine.
Glucosamine and warfarin
Case reports have described increased warfarin effect in people who started glucosamine, with or without chondroitin. Anyone taking warfarin or another anticoagulant should speak to a physician before use and have clotting monitored.
What else is in the capsule
The supplement facts panel lists a capsule of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and water, and magnesium stearate. Coral Club labels the product gluten free and free of soy. The card also shows a "capsules made from beef gelatin" badge, which contradicts the panel; check the bottle label if gelatin matters to you. Chondroitin is of animal origin in any case, so the product is not vegetarian.
