Gotu Kola Extract is a dietary supplement manufactured in the USA for Coral Club. Each vegetable capsule contains 120 mg of gotu kola (Centella asiatica) herb extract with rice flour. The label directs one capsule twice a day with a meal — 240 mg a day — so a bottle of 60 capsules lasts 30 days.
Coral Club describes gotu kola as a plant traditionally used to support cognitive function and a sense of calm during occasional stress, and states that it may help support healthy blood flow and vascular elasticity.*
Gotu kola is a small creeping herb of the parsley family, native to tropical and subtropical Asia, with a long history of use in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese practice. Its best-studied compounds are triterpenoids — asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid — alongside flavonoids.
Despite the name, gotu kola is not related to the kola nut and contains no caffeine.
The card gives 120 mg of herb extract per capsule but does not state the extract ratio or a standardized content of triterpenoids. Commercial gotu kola extracts vary widely in their triterpenoid levels, so results from studies of standardized extracts cannot be applied directly to this product.
Gotu kola is generally well tolerated in supplement amounts, but a small number of cases of liver injury have been reported with gotu kola products. Stop use and seek medical advice if abdominal pain, dark urine or yellowing of the skin or eyes develops. Anyone with a history of liver problems should consult a physician first. Gotu kola is traditionally avoided during pregnancy, and it may add to the effect of sedative medicines.
Coral Club also mentions glucose metabolism among the areas studied for gotu kola's triterpenoids; anyone taking medicines that lower blood sugar should consult a physician before use.
