Protivity Ultra is a dietary supplement manufactured in the USA for Coral Club. A serving of five caplets provides 11 free-form amino acids — led by 1.25 g of leucine and 625 mg each of isoleucine and valine — for a total of 5 g of protein and 35 calories. The label directs five caplets each day with an 8–12 oz glass of water, so a bottle of 150 caplets lasts 30 days.

Coral Club states that Protivity Ultra helps supplement dietary protein intake and supports the maintenance of healthy muscles and connective tissues, physical performance and muscle recovery.*

What amino acids are

Proteins are built from 20 amino acids. Nine are essential, meaning the body cannot make them and they must come from food: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. The others can be made by the body, though some become conditionally essential in certain circumstances. Free-form amino acids like those in Protivity Ultra do not need to be broken down from protein before they are absorbed.

What is — and is not — in the formula

Protivity Ultra contains seven of the nine essential amino acids, including the three branched-chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, valine), plus arginine, glutamine, citrulline and cysteine. It does not contain methionine or tryptophan, so on its own it is not a complete essential amino acid source. Research suggests that BCAAs alone cannot sustain muscle protein building without the full set of essential amino acids, which normally come from dietary protein. Sources are listed under Research.

The card groups histidine with the nonessential amino acids; histidine is in fact classified as essential.

5 g of protein in context

Five caplets supply 5 g of protein-equivalent — about the amount in one egg. For comparison, general guidance for adults is at least 0.8 g of protein per kilogram of body weight a day, and sports nutrition guidance for active people is higher. Protivity Ultra adds to dietary protein; it is not a replacement for protein-rich meals.

Before use

  • Phenylketonuria: contains 500 mg of phenylalanine per serving.
  • Pregnancy and nursing: Coral Club directs consulting a healthcare practitioner.
  • Kidney or liver conditions: consult a physician before taking amino acid supplements.
