Coral Lecithin is a dietary supplement manufactured in the USA. Each capsule contains 1,200 mg of lecithin from soy in a gelatin capsule shell. A bottle holds 120 capsules — a 60-day supply at the directed one capsule twice a day with a meal.

Coral Club states that Coral Lecithin helps support the nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract, and helps in the digestion and absorption of fats.*

What lecithin is

Lecithin is a mixture of fatty substances, the most important of which are phospholipids — the molecules that form the basic structure of every cell membrane in the body. Soybeans are one of the richest commercial sources. Lecithin also occurs in foods such as eggs, and it is widely used in the food industry as an emulsifier.

What a capsule contains

The 1,200 mg of lecithin breaks down on the label as follows:

  • Total polar lipids — 680 mg
  • Total phosphatides — 600 mg
  • Total phospholipids — 515 mg, including phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidic acid

The label does not state how much of that is phosphatidylcholine specifically, so the 1,200 mg should not be read as 1,200 mg of phosphatidylcholine. Each capsule also provides 10 calories and 1 g of fat.

Phospholipids and choline

Phosphatidylcholine is a dietary source of choline, a nutrient the body uses to build cell membranes and to make acetylcholine, a messenger involved in nerve signaling and muscle movement. Coral Club notes that phospholipids are fundamental components of cell membranes, including those of nerve cells.* The FDA has set a Daily Value of 550 mg for choline, and dietary surveys suggest many adults eat less than that. Coral Lecithin's label gives no choline figure, however.

Soy and gelatin

The lecithin is derived from soy, one of the major food allergens, and the capsule shell is made of gelatin, glycerin and purified water. Coral Club's card describes the capsules as made from beef gelatin. The product is therefore not suitable for anyone with a soy allergy, or for a vegetarian or vegan diet.

Precautions and storage

If pregnant or nursing, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Shelf life is 2 years. Store in a dry place, protected from direct sunlight, at a temperature not exceeding 77°F (25°C), out of reach of children.
