Premium Plankton Oil is a dietary supplement manufactured in Spain for Coral Club. Each capsule contains 500 mg of Calanus oil (Zooca™, a trademark of Calanus AS, Norway), providing not less than 92.5 mg of omega-3 fatty acids and not less than 0.3 mg of astaxanthin, plus 3.4 mg of vitamin E (22% DV). The label directs one capsule twice a day with a meal, so a bottle of 60 capsules lasts 30 days.
What Calanus oil is
Calanus finmarchicus is a tiny crustacean — a copepod — and one of the most abundant zooplankton species in the cold waters of the North Atlantic. Its oil contains omega-3 and other unsaturated fatty acids and the red carotenoid astaxanthin, which gives the oil its deep red color. Coral Club states that harvesting does not harm the population and that the oil is produced without chemicals.
Most of the fat in Calanus oil is in the form of wax esters, unlike the triglycerides of fish oil, the ethyl esters of many concentrates or the phospholipids of krill oil. Wax esters are digested more slowly. A 12-week randomized study found that omega-3 from Calanus oil, fish oil and krill oil raised blood omega-3 levels to a similar extent. How much omega-3
Two capsules provide at least 185 mg of omega-3 fatty acids a day. That is a modest amount compared with a typical fish oil capsule; the card does not break the total down into EPA and DHA.
Vitamin E and astaxanthin
Vitamin E helps protect cells from oxidative stress.* Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring carotenoid antioxidant.*
