Cascara Sagrada is a dietary supplement in coated tablets, manufactured in the USA for Coral Club. Each tablet carries 487.5 mg of bark powder from Rhamnus purshiana, the cascara buckthorn native to North America, and a bottle holds 100 tablets.
According to Coral Club, cascara sagrada is a plant-based botanical traditionally used to help maintain regularity and support healthy intestinal function, and it supports the body's natural elimination processes and overall digestive balance.* The card describes the bark as containing naturally occurring plant compounds that support normal intestinal processes and help maintain regular bowel movements.*
Coral Club sets out four separate precautions on the card, and they shape how the product is used more than anything else on this page:
To which the manufacturer adds that anyone pregnant or nursing should consult a healthcare practitioner before taking the product.
The active compounds in cascara bark are anthraquinone glycosides, and they work by stimulating the bowel rather than by softening stool or adding bulk. Products of that class are meant for short, occasional use.
Prolonged use of anthraquinone-containing botanicals is associated with melanosis coli, a benign darkening of the colon lining that is documented in the literature and fades once the product is stopped. Sources are listed under Research. Coral Club gives no maximum number of days on the card, so the sensible reading of "not for long-term use" is the shortest course that achieves the purpose, with a physician setting the limit if it is needed repeatedly.
Cascara sagrada is lawful in dietary supplements in the United States. It is worth knowing, though, that in 2002 the FDA removed it from the list of ingredients allowed in over-the-counter laxative drug products, because the effectiveness data the agency asked for were not submitted. That decision concerned the drug monograph, not this supplement category, and it is stated here for completeness rather than as a safety finding.
The tablet is coated, not encapsulated. Binders and fillers are dicalcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium and hydroxypropyl cellulose, with magnesium stearate from a vegetable source; the coating is water, polyethylene glycol and carnauba wax.
Coral Club declares the product free of soy and suitable for vegetarians.
Shelf life is 2 years. Store in a dry place at room temperature, out of reach of children.

The FDA has not established a Daily Value for cascara sagrada bark, which the dash marks. At the maximum directed two tablets a day the total is 975 mg.
The label declares whole bark powder, not a standardized extract, so the content of anthraquinone glycosides is not stated and will vary with the raw material.
Beyond soy the card makes no allergen statement, so none is made here.
Take one tablet once or twice a day, before a meal, swallowed whole with water.
Do not exceed the recommended dose. Coral Club states the product is not for long-term use and gives no maximum course length, so keep the course as short as the purpose allows and involve a physician if it is needed repeatedly.
