Super-Flora is a dietary supplement manufactured in the USA for Coral Club. Each vegetable capsule contains two probiotic species — Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus — together with inulin, a prebiotic fiber. Coral Club states that the probiotics help support the growth of beneficial bacteria and a healthy gut microbiota, and that inulin serves as a food source for them, supporting digestive health.*
From these figures, a capsule starts out with roughly 3.3 billion CFU of B. longum and 2.2 billion CFU of L. acidophilus. The card does not state the CFU count remaining at the end of shelf life, and it does not name the specific strains.
The effects of probiotics are specific to individual strains, not just species, and to the amounts studied. Because Super-Flora's strains are not identified, study results for particular strains of B. longum or L. acidophilus cannot be applied to it directly. Inulin is a soluble fiber found naturally in chicory root, onions, garlic and bananas. Gut bacteria ferment it. The 25 mg in a capsule is small compared with the several grams a day typically eaten from food.
