Coral Taurine is a dietary supplement manufactured in the USA that provides 850 mg of taurine in each capsule. A bottle holds 60 capsules, with a net weight of 62.8 g.
Coral Club states that it provides taurine, an amino acid naturally found throughout the body that helps support normal cardiovascular function.*
"Coral" is Coral Club's brand name for this line of supplements. The card does not state that the taurine comes from coral or any marine source, and no such origin is claimed here.
Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that the body produces itself and that is found in the heart, brain, muscles and eyes. Dietary taurine comes mainly from meat, fish and dairy, so intake from food is typically lower on a vegetarian or vegan diet. The body can also make taurine from the amino acids cysteine and methionine, which is why it is not classed as an essential nutrient for healthy adults.
At one capsule a day, the intake is 850 mg of taurine; at the maximum of two capsules, 1,700 mg. A published risk assessment identified 3 g a day as an observed safe level for supplemental taurine, so the directed amount sits below it. The source is listed under Research.
Besides taurine, each capsule contains microcrystalline cellulose and MCT coconut oil, in a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (plant-based) capsule shell. Coral Club labels the product gluten free and free of soy.
The card is inconsistent on one point: its badges say "capsules made from beef gelatin", while its ingredient list names a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose capsule. Anyone avoiding gelatin should check the label on the bottle.
