Federal regulations require this warning on iron-containing supplements sold in the United States. A handful of adult-strength iron capsules can seriously harm a small child, so store the bottle closed and out of sight and reach.
Iron is an essential mineral. The body uses it to make hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues, and it is part of many enzymes, including those involved in energy metabolism.* Coral Club states that iron is vital for blood cell formation and oxygen transport, and that it takes part in the synthesis of antioxidant enzymes.*

Iron needs differ a lot. The US Recommended Dietary Allowance is 8 mg a day for adult men and for women after menopause, 18 mg for women aged 19 to 50, and 27 mg during pregnancy. Plant foods supply iron in a form that is absorbed less efficiently, which is why vegetarians are often advised to pay attention to iron intake.
Iron is not a supplement to take "just in case". The body has no active way to remove excess iron, and some people carry an inherited tendency to store too much of it. Adult men, women after menopause, and anyone with a known iron-storage condition should take iron only on the advice of a physician, ideally after a blood test.
The label directs taking the capsule with a meal. Iron can reduce the absorption of some medicines, including levothyroxine, certain antibiotics (tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones) and levodopa; these are usually taken several hours apart from iron. Calcium supplements and antacids can in turn reduce iron absorption. Ask a pharmacist about spacing if you take any of these.
Microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide, in a vegetable capsule of hypromellose and water. Coral Club labels the product suitable for vegetarians and free of soy.
