PentoKan is a dietary supplement in effervescent tablet form, manufactured in Germany for Coral Club. Each tablet provides 420 mg of potassium (9% of the Daily Value), 100 mg of vitamin C (111% DV) and 20 mg of D-ribose. The label directs dissolving one tablet in 60 ml (2 fl oz) of water or fruit juice once or twice a day with a meal. A tube holds 20 tablets, which lasts 10 to 20 days.
Potassium is an essential mineral and electrolyte. It helps maintain fluid balance and is involved in nerve signaling and muscle contraction, including the heartbeat.* Coral Club states that potassium helps keep the body's electrolyte balance steady.* Most potassium comes from food — fruits, vegetables, legumes, dairy and potatoes — and the Daily Value is 4,700 mg, so one tablet adds 9%.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant and is needed for normal collagen formation and immune function.* D-ribose is a simple sugar the body uses to build ATP, the molecule cells use to store and release energy. The 20 mg in a tablet is a small amount.
For most healthy adults, 420–840 mg of potassium a day from supplements fits within normal intake. The situation is different for anyone with reduced kidney function or taking medicines that raise blood potassium — ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, potassium-sparing diuretics such as spironolactone, or trimethoprim. In these cases extra potassium can be harmful, so speak to a physician before use. Coral Club directs anyone pregnant or nursing to consult a healthcare practitioner.

Citric acid and the potassium bicarbonate react in water to produce the fizz. The tablet also contains dextrin, sorbitol, inulin and starch. Sorbitol in larger amounts can loosen stools.
Coral Club labels PentoKan kosher certified, suitable for vegetarians and free of soy. Shelf life is 2 years. Store in a dry place, protected from direct sunlight, at no more than 77°F (25°C), out of reach of children. Close the tube tightly after use to keep moisture out.
